Minnesota officials are releasing video of a Taser incident that ended in the death of a 29-year-old motorist.

Mark Backlund of Fridley had just crashed his minivan on I-694 in the northern Minneapolis suburb of New Brighton in January. Video from a squad car dashcam shows state troopers approaching Backlund’s minivan to see if he’s OK.

The video appears to show Backlund punching a trooper, as authorities and witnesses say he did. A Taser-mounted camera shows Backlund trying to put his keys in the ignition, and then the Taser being used on him.

The video footage shows Backlund getting out of the van and struggling with troopers who used the Taser two more times before they finally handcuffed him and put him in an ambulance. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

An outside investigation earlier this month cleared the troopers of any misconduct. A medical examiner found that “acute cocaine intoxication” was the main factor in Backlund’s death.

Sure, this guy was an idiot, but did his crime warrant a death sentence?
